For what I want to do, (really do, not just jobs that I wouldn't mind settling for), in places that I would want to live (after ND, I realize I am NOT the type of person that blooms easily where planted, no matter how hard I try), that are longer than 2 years or permanent, that pay a decent wage for the level of education and experience I have, and using the outlets that I know to look for jobs I've seen FIVE jobs in the past two years and ten months that fit. Of the five, two were for the same job, for the same guy. Another two were for the same lab for the same boss but slightly different jobs.
2 were right after I verbally agreed to a minimum of 18 months at my current position
1 went to a PhD. I didn't even get a phone interview, but it was understandable.
1 I came in a close 2nd to getting (and I still hope some days to get a random call from the PI saying it just didn't work out and asking me if I am still interested in moving to a quaint little village by the sea)
The last one is still open. I'm working on revising my letter that i sent to them a little over a year ago and updating my resume. If I learned anything from the last Federal job that I applied to its that it doesn't matter if you get your application in a month before the deadline, no one looks at it until then anyways. So, I'm saving myself a month of agony and working on it this weekend and next. I'm also not telling anyone much about it, b/c the more I learn about it, the more I think its an even BETTER fit than the one I tried for last year! Researching the group today I found their newsletters and learned a lot more about who does what and realized that not only do I already do what they want in the job description at my present gig, but I'd be a GREAT match for the lab. (the town, on the other hand, is hard to get a feel for vie the interwebs)
What I do know is that up until 2 days ago it was only advertised on the fed gov't career board. Then I saw it on the American Fisheries Society job board, which means that more people will see it, competition will be tight, and I need to bring my A game to this application.
Good thing I already have a copy of an A-game app from the 2nd place job ;)
